Although they aren’t that dangerous and don’t spread disease, bedbugs can be a nuisance. In fact, a female bed bug can lay >500 eggs in her lifetime. And fortunately, you can get rid of them!

Bed bugs infestation signs

Bed bugs are expert hiders, they know where to hide to avoid detection. Instead of looking for bugs, you should look for signs of a bed bug infestation:

  1. Bed bug bites on your skin
  2. Alive bedbugs crawling on your bed and may include dresser and carpet.
  3. Dark or rusty colored stains on your bed
  4. Unpleasant scent around the infested area

How to get rid of bed bugs

Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that feed on human blood. As the name suggests, they live on the bed and can spread rapidly. Now that you’re sure that you have a bed bugs infestation, you’ll need to take an action to get rid of the pests.

Clean everything

Wash everything in your bedroom that might be infested by bed bugs: beddings, linens, curtains, carpets, and clothing in hot water and dry them on the highest dryer setting. These bugs are pretty easy to kill with extreme heat (hot and cold)!

Don’t move items from an infested room to a clean one – you could spread the bugs. Lastly, move your bed at least 10-15 cm away from the wall so bedbugs can’t climb on.

Use insecticides

Insecticides can help you get rid of bedbugs and even other bugs! There are plenty of insecticides on the market but, it’s best to choose the one which is specifically marked for bedbugs.

Do not use it on your mattresses and bedding unless the label specifically says you can use it on bedding. Generally, it’s safer and more effective to hire an experienced pest control professional.

Vacuum the whole area

If you finished with all the cleaning, now it’s time to vacuum! Use a stiff brush to scrub bedding to remove bedbugs and their eggs before vacuuming.

It’s a good idea to vacuum your bed area frequently. Keep in mind that you need to immediately place the vacuum cleaner bag in a plastic bag and place it in a garbage can outdoors.

Keep them out

Once they’re gone, you’ll want to make sure they really have gone. After all, prevention is the key. Here are some tips:

  1. Clean up any clutter and don’t leave them on the floor
  2. Cover your mattress with a bed bugs cover with a zipper
  3. Vacuum and wash beddings often
  4. Seal cracks around socket so they can’t sneak in

Thinking of buying a new mattress?

If your mattress is infested, you may want to get rid of it and get a new one. However, it’s not a good idea if you haven’t tried to get rid the rest of your home of bedbugs or they will infest your new mattress! Finish all the bugs extermination and make sure everything is clean first.
