Workouts that Could Help You Sleep Better

For those who have experienced the frustration and exhaustion that comes with insomnia will know that they will try anything to help them fall and stay asleep.

But, before you resort to pills or potions – there is something really simple that you can try to improve the quality of your sleep (besides a great mattress) – it’s exercise!

How

Regular exercise, particularly in the morning or afternoon, can impact your sleep quality by raising your body temperature. And later in the day, when your internal thermostat drops back to its normal range, this can trigger feelings of drowsiness and help you drop off to sleep. Also, if you exercise outdoors, you’ll be exposed to natural light, an essential element in helping your body establish a proper sleep-wake cycle.

Timing matters!

Morning

Suggested workout: Cardio

Working out in the morning allows more time to warm up to get muscles ready!

Afternoon

Suggested exercise: Strength training

Try to enable your body 4-5 hours to fall asleep after a strenuous strength workout.

Evening

Suggested workout: Yoga

Avoid high impact workouts late in the evenings as they stimulate the brain – preventing us from falling asleep.

How much exercise is right?

There is no one right answer to this question. The National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association recommend at least 150 minutes of exercise a week for healthy adults – that’s 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
